Privacy Policy
In short:
- We don’t sell your information.
- Your name, your notes and what you save stay on your device. Your answers about faith are never shared with advertising companies.
- If you allow it, the app sends usage information and your answers to our optional questions to our analytics provider, so we can see what helps and what doesn’t. You can change this at any time in Settings > Help improve Brightword.
- Apple handles every payment. Our subscription service keeps a record of purchases.
- We advertise Brightword. To learn which ads work, we may tell the ad company behind a download that it led to a trial or a purchase. If anything we do would count as tracking under Apple’s rules, the app asks your permission first.
- To ask what we hold or to have it deleted, write to support@getbrightword.com.
Who we are
Brightword (“we”, “us”) decides how the information described here is used, and is responsible for it. You can reach us at support@getbrightword.com.
This policy covers the Brightword app, its widgets and this website.
What stays on your device
These things are stored only on your device, in storage the app shares with its widgets:
- the name you give us, if you give one;
- notes you write on verses;
- the verses, prayers and affirmations you save;
- your settings, reminder times and streak;
- your answers to the questions we ask when you first open the app.
Your name, your notes and the signature you draw for a streak commitment are never sent to us or to anyone else (the signature isn’t stored at all). Everything above is removed when you delete the app.
What we collect if you allow it
When you first open Brightword, it asks whether you’d like to help improve the app. Until you choose Allow, the app sends nothing to our analytics provider. If you allow it, the app sends:
- How you use the app: for example screens opened, steps of the first-run questions completed, verses, prayers and affirmations viewed, saved or shared, collections and looks chosen, reminders set, widgets opened, and offers viewed, started or completed.
- Your answers to optional questions: such as your age range, gender, how you heard about Brightword, how familiar you are with the Bible, your church tradition, what you’re carrying or hoping for, and your goals. Every question can be skipped. Your church tradition and other faith answers can reveal religious beliefs, which some laws treat as sensitive; we ask for your consent before collecting them and use them only as described here.
- Your settings and status: such as your look, collection and translation, how many reminders you get and when, which kinds of widget you’ve added, your streak counts, and whether you have Brightword Pro.
- Device and app information: such as device model, iOS version, app version, language and time zone.
- An anonymous ID made up by the app, so events from the same phone can be counted together. It isn’t your name, Apple Account or advertising identifier. Turning analytics off replaces it with a new one.
- Error and crash reports: what the app was doing when something went wrong, with device and app version, so we can fix it.
We use this to understand how Brightword is used, which features and content help people, where the first-run experience loses people, how offers and subscriptions perform, and to find and fix problems. We may also use it to adjust settings in the app remotely (for example the order of the first-run questions), which only happens while analytics is on.
Our analytics provider receives your device’s IP address when the app sends information, as any internet service does. We’ve set it to discard IP addresses rather than store them with your events. It may still record an approximate location, such as country or city, worked out from the IP address when an event arrives; we use that only in totals.
To change your choice, open Brightword and go to Settings > Help improve Brightword. Turning it off stops sending at once, gives the app a new anonymous ID and unlinks your purchase record from your analytics profile. Everything in the app works the same either way. Turning it off doesn’t delete what was already sent; to have that deleted, see Your choices and rights.
Purchases
Brightword Pro is sold through the App Store. Apple takes the payment and handles billing, renewals and refunds under Apple’s privacy policy. We never see your card details or your Apple Account details.
Whether or not you allow analytics, the app records each purchase with our subscription service, RevenueCat, under a random ID that RevenueCat creates. The record includes what you bought, the price and currency, dates, the App Store transaction ID and later events from Apple such as renewals, cancellations and refunds, along with basic device and app information. We use it to see trials, renewals and refunds, and for accounting.
RevenueCat passes these purchase events on to our analytics provider. If you’ve allowed analytics, they are joined to your analytics profile. If you haven’t, they arrive under RevenueCat’s random ID and are never joined to your profile or your answers.
If you found Brightword through an Apple Search Ads ad, the purchase record also notes which campaign it was (see Measuring our ads).
Measuring our ads
We pay for ads that bring people to Brightword, and we want to know which ones are worth it.
- Apple Search Ads: when the app first opens, it asks Apple whether the download came from one of our Apple Search Ads ads. Apple answers with the campaign, ad group and keyword, without saying who you are, and our subscription service RevenueCat keeps that answer with your purchase record so we can see what each campaign costs per trial and per subscriber. This happens whether or not you allow analytics. It uses Apple’s own information only; Apple says this doesn’t track you across apps and websites, so it doesn’t need your permission.
- Other ad partners, such as TikTok and Meta: when we run ads with them, we may send them that a download led to a trial or a purchase (with the plan and price), and which of their campaigns the download came from, so we can tell which ads worked. We never send them your answers about faith, your name or your notes.
- The tracking prompt: if measuring an ad would mean linking what happens in Brightword with information from other companies’ apps or websites, which Apple calls tracking, the app shows Apple’s prompt and asks your permission first. If you choose Ask App Not to Track, we don’t track you. You can change this at any time in your device’s settings (on iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking).
Permissions on your device
- Notifications: reminders and other notifications are scheduled on your device. No server sends them, and the text of a reminder isn’t sent to us.
- Photos: when you save a wallpaper, Brightword asks only to add photos. If you make an album for your Lock Screen’s Photo Shuffle, it asks for access to your library so it can create the album and add its own pictures. Brightword doesn’t look through or upload your photos.
You can change these at any time in your device’s settings.
When you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write. When you use Settings > Contact support in the app, the email also includes the app version, iOS version, device model, your Purchases ID (the random ID RevenueCat uses for your purchase record) and, while analytics is on, your Support ID (your anonymous analytics ID). We use these to answer you and keep the conversation for as long as it’s useful for helping you.
This website
This site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages people read, so we can make the site more useful. Google Analytics receives your IP address, your browser and device type, the page you came from and the pages you visit, and sets cookies (named _ga) to tell one visit from the next. Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland, and anyone whose browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, are counted without cookies. We don’t use it for advertising: Google’s advertising features and Google signals are off. You can also block it with Google’s opt-out browser add-on.
Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs, including IP addresses, to run and protect the site.
Who we share it with
We share information with the service providers who run parts of Brightword for us. They may use it only to provide their service to us.
- PostHog, Inc. (analytics, and error and crash reports, with your consent; data stored in the United States) — privacy policy
- RevenueCat, Inc. (purchase records) — privacy policy
- Apple (App Store payments, subscriptions and refunds; crash reports if you’ve chosen to share them with app developers in iPhone Settings) — privacy policy
- Cloudflare, Inc. (delivers email sent to our support address) — privacy policy
- Vercel Inc. (hosts this website) — privacy policy
- Google LLC (Google Analytics for this website, without advertising features) — privacy policy
When we advertise, we also share the limited information described in Measuring our ads with our ad partners: Apple (Apple Search Ads), and TikTok and Meta when we run ads with them. They handle it under their own privacy policies: Apple, TikTok, Meta.
We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect people’s safety or our rights, or to a buyer or successor if Brightword is sold or reorganized, under the same promises as this policy.
We don’t sell personal information or share it with data brokers. Apart from the ad results above, we don’t share it with advertising companies, and we never share your answers about faith, your name or your notes with them. We track you across other companies’ apps and websites only if you allow it when the app asks.
Legal bases (EU and UK)
If data protection laws such as the GDPR or UK GDPR apply to you, we rely on:
- your consent for analytics, error reports and your answers to optional questions, including explicit consent for answers that reveal religious beliefs. You can withdraw it at any time in the app;
- performing our agreement with you to provide Brightword Pro and keep your purchase working;
- your consent before sharing purchase results with ad partners where the law requires it, and always before anything that counts as tracking;
- our legitimate interests in answering your messages, keeping the app and website secure, understanding purchases in aggregate, counting visits to this website without cookies, and learning which of our Apple Search Ads campaigns work;
- legal obligations such as tax and accounting records.
Our service providers are based in the United States, so your information is processed there. Where the law requires it, these transfers are covered by safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
How long we keep it
- What’s on your device stays until you delete it or delete the app.
- Analytics and error reports are kept for as long as they help us understand and improve Brightword, and are deleted sooner if you ask.
- Purchase records are kept while your purchase is active and afterwards for as long as we need them for accounting, tax and handling disputes.
- Support emails are kept for as long as they’re useful for helping you.
- Website analytics are deleted by Google Analytics after at most 14 months.
Your choices and rights
You can turn analytics on or off at any time in Settings > Help improve Brightword, turn tracking off in your device’s settings (on iPhone: Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking), and delete everything on your device by deleting the app.
Depending on where you live (for example the EU, the UK or California and other US states), you may have the right to ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, to delete it, to receive it in a portable form, to object to or restrict how we use it, to opt out of sharing it for advertising, and to withdraw your consent. We won’t treat you differently for using these rights. If you are in the EU or UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
To make a request, email support@getbrightword.com. We can only find your information by its ID:
- For analytics, send the email from Settings > Contact support in the app while Help improve Brightword is on, so your Support ID is included. Turning analytics off creates a new ID, so if you want past data deleted, write to us before you turn it off.
- For a purchase record, send the email from Settings > Contact support so your Purchases ID is included, or tell us roughly when you bought and which plan, and include the order ID from your Apple receipt if you have it.
We’ll reply within 30 days. Deleting your information doesn’t cancel a subscription; see how to cancel.
Children
Brightword isn’t directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child under 13 has sent us information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Security
Information the app sends is encrypted in transit, and we limit access to our service accounts. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we work to protect what we hold.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change, we’ll update this page and its effective date. If a change is significant, we’ll also tell you in the app or in its App Store notes before it applies.
